Quantifying Morphological Computation
The field of embodied intelligence emphasises the importance of the morphology and environment with respect to the behaviour of a cognitive system. The contribution of the morphology to the behaviour, commonly known as morphological computation, is well-recognised in this community. We believe that the field would benefit from a formalisation of this concept as we would like to ask how much the...
متن کاملQuantifying and Measuring Morphological Complexity
It is a standard assumption in Linguistics that all human languages are equally (and enormously) complex; when looked at as a whole, no language can be called “simpler” than another. Certainly, languages can differ in the distribution of their complexity, so that one might employ a richer inflectional system, or entertain a more complicated gamut of syllable shapes than another, but it is gener...
متن کاملQuantifying Morphological Computation based on an Information Decomposition of the Sensorimotor Loop
The question of how an agent is affected by its embodiment has attracted growing attention in recent years. A new field of artificial intelligence has emerged, which is based on the idea that intelligence cannot be understood without taking the embodiment into account. The contribution of an agent’s embodiment to its behaviour is also known as morphological computation. In this work, we propose...
متن کاملVocal development through morphological computation
The vocal behavior of infants changes dramatically during early life. Whether or not such a change results from the growth of the body during development-as opposed to solely neural changes-has rarely been investigated. In this study of vocal development in marmoset monkeys, we tested the putative causal relationship between bodily growth and vocal development. During the first two months of li...
متن کاملFast computation of morphological area pattern spectra
An area based counterpart of the binary structural opening spectra is developed. It is shown that these area opening and closing spectra can be computed using an adaptation of Tarjan’s union-find algorithm. These spectra provide rotation, translation, and scale invariant pattern vectors for texture analysis.
